10,000 more SPOs sanctioned for Jammu and Kashmir Police

The Home Ministry on Wednesday sanctioned 10,000 more Special Police Officers in Jammu and Kashmir Police in view of security-related requirements due to ongoing unrest in the Kashmir Valley.

"The Home Ministry has sanctioned 10,000 additional SPOs for the Jammu and Kashmir Police Department. The orders have been implemented with immediate effect and the additional numbers is over and above the existing strength of the SPOs," a government statement said.

It said the additional police officers will be utilised especially for "security related requirements".

The reimbursement of expenditure to the state government by the Centre in respect of these 10,000 officials will be as per the existing approved security-related expenditure guidelines, it said.

Normal life in the Kashmir Valley remained affected for the 75th day on Wednesday.

As many as 89 people have been killed in the ongoing unrest that broke out a day after the July 8 killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani by security forces in south Kashmir.
