Ten students were killed and four injured Sunday in a car accident in Upper Egypt's Sohag governorate, a media report said.

The car carrying 14 university students, including the driver, fell into a dried sluiceway when the driver tried to avoid a truck coming from the opposite direction. Nine students were killed at the scene and another died on the way to the hospital, Xinhua reported citing state-run media Ahram-Online.

On Wednesday, 10 members of a family were killed and 17 people were injured in a car crash on a desert highway, 80 km away from the capital Cairo.

Since mid-August, over 110 Egyptians have been killed and more than 120 injured in road accidents across the country.

Road accidents kill at least 12,000 people every year in the most populous Arab country, according to official reports. Lack of highway monitoring systems, poor road maintenance and negligence of traffic rules are behind the high rate of traffic accidents in Egypt.
