At least 11 Egyptian civilians were killed and six others were wounded when a mortar shell launched by terrorists hit a house in the northern Sinai Peninsula, a security official told Efe news agency on Thursday.

The shell was targeting an unidentified military position in the town of al-Zahira, but it missed, the official explained, completely destroying a nearby residence.

Rescue teams found 11 bodies in the wreckage, the official noted.

Meanwhile, two Egyptian policemen were killed and three police recruits were wounded on Wednesday night when a Sinai security patrol was bombed, according to the interior ministry.

The ministry noted that security forces in North Sinai are investigating diligently to catch the perpetrators.
