Twelve boys and their football coach, who last week were rescued from a cave in northern Thailand, were discharged from hospital on Wednesday.

The Wild Boars football team had been recovering and receiving medical and psychological support following their rescue, ending over two weeks of ordeal that had gripped the world's attention, reports Efe.

The group entered Tham Luang cave located in the northern province of Chiang Rai during an excursion on June 23 after completing a training session, when a sudden storm flooded the exit.

Their whereabouts were not known for nine days until they were found four kilometres (2.4 miles) from the entrance on July 2.

They were rescued in batches of two from July 8 to 10.

Former Thai Navy SEAL, 38-year-old Samarn Kunan, lost his life in the operation. He has been hailed a hero.
