The Uttar Pradesh cabinet Tuesday approved the "Samajwadi Pension" scheme, aimed at giving direct benefits to 40 lakh families in the state, an official said.
Beneficiaries under the scheme will get Rs.500-750 per month, a state government spokesman told media persons here.
Modalities for executing the scheme are being worked out and budgetary provisions have been made, he said.
The cabinet meeting, presided over by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, also cleared a proposal for assimilation of 1.7 lakh 'Shiksha Mitra' (teachers hired on contractual basis) into service, as promised in the Samajwadi Party's election manifesto.
