Ten vehicles were impounded and 59 bikers were booked here for violation of traffic rules at night, police said Monday.

The action taken Sunday night was part of a drive launched in June and came a day after a stunt biker was shot dead in police firing in central Delhi past Saturday midnight.

"We checked 860 motorcycles and challaned 59 of them in New Delhi area last night. At least 10 bikes have been impounded," Deputy Commissioner of Police S.B.S. Tyagi told IANS.

"Keeping in view of recent violent acts of bike riders, we had started a special drive against bikers in the month of June. Twelve people have been arrested and seven cases registered in the crackdown," said Tyagi.

A teenaged pillion rider Karan Pandey was killed after being hit by a bullet fired by police past-midnight Saturday in an attempt to puncture the tyre of the bike driven by his friend Puneet Sharma, who was injured.

The tragedy occurred amid the ongoing crackdown on night-time stunt biking when young men zoom down wide roads of New Delhi at great speed, putting lives of pedestrians and other motorists at risk.

According to police, most stunt motorcyclists in Delhi are aged up to 25 years. After speeding on the roads at night, they return home. Some of them have been accused of assaulting policemen and harassing women.
