Six commuters sustained minor injuries when four coaches of a Harbour Line suburban train bound for Andheri derailed at a railway crossing near Mahim on Friday morning, an official said.
Due to the derailment, services on the Andheri-Wadala sector of the Harbour Line on Central Railway were suspended, hitting thousands of people travelling to and fro for the 12-day Ganeshotsav celebrations which started on Friday.
The official said that around 9.50 a.m., a train arriving from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and bound for Andheri derailed around 50 metres outside Mahim station.
As per prima facie investigations, the incident occurred while the train was changing tracks at a crossing outside the railway station, and coach numbers six to nine jumped the tracks.
The injured commuters, including four women, were rushed to Sion Hospital and given treatment before they were allowed to go, while work to restore the track was taken up, said the official.
While services on the Harbour Line were severely hit, a cascading effect was experienced even on the Western Railway and Central Railway mainlines.
