84 Delhi policemen booked for corruption

A total of 84 Delhi Police personnel have been booked in 46 corruption cases registered against them in the last 17 months.

Police data shows 74 of the 84 officers were booked under the Prevention of Corruption (POC) Act by the anti-corruption unit of Delhi Police.

The remaining 10 police personnel were booked on corruption charges registered against them in police stations across the city, according to police data released on Saturday.

The 74 officers include two inspectors, six sub-inspectors, six assistant sub-inspectors, 22 head constables and 38 constables.

The 10 additional police personnel are five sub-inspectors, one assistant sub-inspector, two head constables and two constables.

The data said the 74 officers were booked in 36 corruption cases registered against them between August 6, 2014 and May 31, 2015 while the other 10 were booked by local police between January 2014 and May 31, 2015.

"Apart from lodging cases against the corrupt officers, Delhi Police had also taken strict action. We took action against 77 officers," Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra told IANS.

A total of 69 officers were suspended, while eight were dismissed on charges of corruption, he said.

The officer said 30 of the 77 officers facing the departmental heat were from local police, 14 from the traffic unit and 24 from the Police Control Room (PCR).

According to the officer, they had shared the data on corrupt police officers with Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung in a review meeting held on May 4.

Delhi Police also informed Jung about its one-year drive against corrupt police personnel.

Special Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) Amulya Patnayak said in the review meeting that the anti-corruption helpline -- 1064 and 9910641064 -- helped them register cases against the corrupt policemen.

Since its inception on August 6 last year, the anti-corruption helpline of the police vigilance department has received 85,657 messages, 10,442 calls and 3,590 SMSes till May 31 against corrupt police personnel.

The vigilance department's additional helpline number - 1800111064 - also handled 537 calls regarding inaction, corruption and other miscellaneous issues.
