Ninety-nine percent of Goa's population has been covered by the central government's Unique Identification Number project, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said Saturday.

Parrikar was speaking after inaugurating an event here to celebrate Statistics Day.

"Goa will also be the first state in the country to complete the Aadhar card registry," Parrikar said, adding that his government had already made the Aadhar card proof of identity for several state government schemes.

The chief minister's comments come some weeks after a minor controversy erupted after several applicants complained of wrong data, including gender, addresses and marital status on their unique identity cards.

Goa has a population of nearly 15 lakh.
