"A Dog's Purpose", produced by Steven Spielberg in association with Indian banner Reliance Entertainment, released in India on Friday, after minting over Rs 1,100 crore ($175 million) at the global box office.

Made on a budget of $22 million, the Lasse Hallstrom directorial is based on a 2010 novel of the same name by W. Bruce Cameron.

"A Dog's Purpose", released earlier this year in the US and China, and China alone contributed over Rs 500 crore ($75 million) to the collections, read a statement from production house Reliance Entertainment.

Yet to release in London, France, Spain, Portugal, Australia, Japan and Russia, the film has been co-produced by Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, Walden Media, Pariah Entertainment Group and Reliance Entertainment.

"A Dog's Purpose" is about a dog that looks to discover his purpose in life over the course of several lifetimes and owners. It turns out that human beings are not the only ones that have existential thoughts such as the meaning of life.

"Its such a fantastic story; I just had to do it. For me, it reminded of my first pet, Gertrude - that classic boy-dog experience," said actor Dennis Quaid.
