A candidate of the Aam Admi Party (AAP) for Delhi assembly polls was arrested here Wednesday for allegedly inciting a mob to riot following the gangrape of a four-year-old girl, an official of the party said.

Satyendra Jain, a candidate from Delhi's Shakur Basti constituency, was protesting the gang-rape of a girl in Meera Bagh July 13, along with her family and other AAP workers. The protest against lack of security for woman in Delhi, held on Ring Road, led to a traffic jam.

"The police used this as an excuse and accused him (Jain) of inciting the protestors and arrested him. They even beat up the girls' family members," the AAP said in a statement.

"The police are trying to protect the accused and lodged a complaint only after we intervened," the party said.

It accused the Delhi government of using Delhi Police to lower the morale of AAP workers.

Delhi Police, however, refuted the claim and said Jain was indeed involved in instigating a riot.

"There is no point in accusing us. Whatever they have to say, they should say in court. He (Jain) is guilty," a senior police officer said.

Police said the main accused in the rape of the girl has been arrested.
