Assam Police Monday claimed to have gathered vital clues about the top official of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) who was abducted over 30 hours ago, and still remains untraced.

Four motorcycle-borne young men stopped the vehicle of Anil Kumar Agarwal, general manager of NHPC's 800 MW power project in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, at Bhalukpong on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border late Saturday evening and whisked him away at gunpoint.

Assam Police indicated that they suspect the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), led by I.K. Songbijit, of being behind the abduction.

"We have recovered three motorcycles used in the abduction of Agarwal, and arrested one person. We have got vital clues. We hope to rescue him soon," Assam's Additional DGP (Law and Order) A.P. Raut said.

He, however, said he was not informed of any ransom demand for the release of the abducted official.

The senior police official, who has been camping in Sonitpur district since Sunday in connection with the abduction, however, refused to divulge details, saying the investigation might be affected.

"I am not in a position to divulge anything. I can only say that our investigation is going on the right direction," Raut said, adding that Arunachal Pradesh police would also be involved in the rescue operation, if needed.
