Actress Maria Paul's friend nabbed in Rs.19 crore fraud

A 22-year-old live-in-partner of South Indian actress Leena Maria Paul was arrested in a Rs.19 crore cheating case, police said Friday.

Sukash Chander Shekhar alias Shekhar Reddy of Bangalore in Karnataka was arrested from a mall in Kolkata, according to police.

Maria Paul has acted in a handful of movies such as "Madras Cafe" and "Red Chillies". She was arrested May 27 with four bouncers in Delhi by officials of Delhi Police and Chennai police. Shekhar had then escaped.

"Two diamond rings worth Rs.75 lakh and a diamond earring worth Rs.12 lakh were recovered from him," said a police officer.

Nine luxury cars and four weapons were recovered when Maria Paul was arrested from a rented farmhouse in south Delhi where she was living with Shekhar.

Shekhar was on the run, visiting Jaipur, Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata and Siliguri in West Bengal. He said he was involved in a number of cheating cases registered in Chennai and Bangalore.

"He allegedly posed as an IAS officer. He and Maria Paul approached Canara Bank in Chennai seeking a Rs.19-crore loan for a project. They disappeared after getting the loan. They bought cars worth Rs.7 crore and jewellery worth Rs.1 crore," said a police officer.

Shekhar was studying MBA at a Bangalore institute.
