Eyeing an increased 100 million tonne cargo capacity by 2020, the Dhamra Port Company Limited - owned by the Adani Group - Tuesday announced it would pump in around Rs. 7,000 crore for expanding the cargo handling facility, an official said.

The money would be invested to fund the port's second phase of expansion involving an increase in the number of berths from two to 13, said company director Santosh Mahapatra.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the eighth Logistics Colloquium organised by CII Eastern Region here, Mahapatra said clearances for the expansion work have been obtained.

"Work will start soon.. The target is to complete the expansion work in 30 months. It is part of our aim to increase our cargo capacity to over 100 million tonnes by 2020," he said.

Now, the port's handles cargo of around 12-13 million tonnes a year.

The Dhamra port in Odisha's Bhadrak district lies on the shore of the Bay of Bengal about seven kilometers from the old port of Dhamra.
