Ending a long dry spell, the clouds opened on Friday afternoon bringing relief to the lakhs of saplings planted by government departments and voluntary groups in the city this season.
"For want of moisture the plants had started withering as arrangements for regular watering had not been made. We hope the showers would prove life-saving," said Vineeta Mittal, a green activist.
The weather office has forecast more rains this weekend.
