The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court cancelled the election of Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Ram Singh on Tuesday.
Singh's election from Patti Assembly Constituency was declared illegal by the bench of Justice A.N. Mittal, who also ordered action against Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sharda Prasad Yadav for electoral wrongdoing.
Ram Singh is the nephew of dreaded bandit Dadua and had won the 2012 state assembly polls by 156 votes. He had defeated the three-time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Moti Singh who challenged his election in the High Court.
The court found that the postal ballots were not counted and hence the results were not correct. The HC also ordered action against the then administrative officials involved in counting of votes.
Reacting to the verdict, Moti Singh said he was happy that the records have been set right, though after much delay.
Ram Singh, however, said that he was not aware of the verdict and will explore the option of going to the Supreme Court once he receives the written copy.
