Facing defamation charges, Congress leaders Anand Sharma and Motilal Vora on Tuesday appeared in a court here and filed collateral bail bonds for allegedly making statements against BJP leader Prem Kumar Dhumal in 2002 on his assets.

Both appeared before Chief Judicial Magistrate Ranjit Singh and filed the security bonds under section 437-A, a lawyer told reporters.

He said the case was listed for next hearing on December 10.

Another Congress leader Amarinder Singh was let off earlier by the court when two-time chief minister Dhumal said he did not want to pursue his defamation complaint against him.

Dhumal informed the court that since the former Punjab chief minister has expressed regret for the hurt caused to him, he did not want to press for the trial against him.

The complaint was linked to an election rally in Hamirpur where Amrinder Singh and Vora alleged that Dhumal amassed assets to the tune of Rs.25 crore through questionable means.

In a separate defamation case filed in 2003, Dhumal sued Anand Sharma, former central commerce and industry minister, for releasing at a press conference a list of assets allegedly owned by Dhumal.

Later, both cases related to Sharma and Amrinder Singh and Vora were clubbed.
