Technology major Apple on Monday said that it has sold more than 13 million new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus models just three days after launch.

The company has broken its own record of 10 million iPhones sold in the first weekend of 2014, benefiting from the inclusion of the Chinese market, where the gadget's debut was delayed last year by regulatory issues.

"Sales for iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple's history," said Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive.

"Customers' feedback is incredible and they are loving 3D Touch and Live Photos, and we can't wait to bring iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus to customers in even more countries on October 9," Cook added.

The company also said that every customer who buys an iPhone 6S or iPhone 6S Plus at an Apple retail store will be offered free personal setup service, helping consumers customise their iPhone by setting up email, showcasing new apps from the app store and helping them get the phone up and running before leaving the store.

"Customers can also learn more about iOS 9 and their new device through free workshops at all Apple retail stores worldwide. In the US, the new iPhones are available through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and additional carriers, and select Apple authorised resellers including Best Buy, Target and Walmart," a statement said.

The company, which will launch its new phones in 40 countries starting October 9 and also launch in three other countries including India on October 16, said that sales completed by Saturday, September 26, would be included in Apple's 2015 fourth fiscal quarter results.

"Sales completed on Sunday, September 27, will be included in Apple's 2016 first fiscal quarter results."
