River Plate said goodbye to the Argentine first division title with a 0-2 defeat at home against Newell's Old Boys from Rosario.
The two goals came in the second half from Maximiliano Rodriguez at the 65 minute and Ignacio Scocco at 87th in Buenos Aires' Monumental Stadium. The match was the 30th and final match of the season on Sunday, reports Xinhua.
Coach Marcelo Gallardo enlisted the majority of his reserves for the match to let his first team rest before the second leg of the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericana on November 26. River will visit Huracan after losing 0-1 in the previous home match.
The first team are also preparing for the FIFA Club World Cup 2015 to be held in Tokyo in December.
River ended the local season in ninth place with 49 points, which broke down to 13 victories, 10 draws and seven defeats. River's biggest rivals, Boca Juniors, beat River this time by 15 points and won the league.
Newell finished the season with 40 points which placed them in the middle of the league table.
