Congress Lok Sabha member from Arunachal Pradesh Takam Sanjoy Friday criticised Delhi Police for their failure to arrest those involved in the murder of an Arunachal student in New Delhi.

The All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union and the All Nyishi Students Union also condemned the incident and demanded the Delhi government to arrest the culprits immediately and to punish them severely.

Nido Taniam, son of Arunachal Pradesh Parliamentary Secretary in-charge of health and family welfare Nido Pavitra, was severely assaulted by shopkeepers in south Delhi's Lajpat Nagar I area Wednesday. He died of his injuries at a hospital Thursday.

"I am shocked to learn that the Lajpat Nagar police delayed in registering the FIR and did not arrest the culprits even 48 hours after the incident," Takan Sanjoy said.

He said the failure of Delhi Police to arrest the culprits has exposed their discriminatory attitude towards the people of the northeast.

"This is not the first incident in Delhi where students from the northeastern states have been attacked," Sanjoy said.

Taniam, a first-year degree student of arts, reportedly went to Lajpat Nagar with three friends Wednesday afternoon, and was looking for an address when someone at a sweet shop started mocking him.
