Australia defeated New Zealand by seven wickets in the World Cup final to clinch their fifth title at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Sunday.

New Zealand's choice of opting to bat did not pan out as planned as they were bowled out for 183 in 45 overs by their trans-Tasman rivals and 2015 World Cup co-hosts.

Middle-order bat Grand Elliot top-scored with 83 for the Black Caps while Aussie pacers Mitchell Johnson and James Faulkner took three wickets each. Mitchell Starc chipped in with two.

In reply, Australia chased down the target with ease, reaching home with seven wickets in hand and 101 balls remaining.

Michael Clarke, who retires from One-Day International (ODI) cricket on Sunday, played the captain's innings, top scoring for his team with 74 while Steven Smith hit 56 not out. Fast bowler Matt Henry took two wickets for New Zealand.
