Australia's unemployment rate remained steady at 5.7 percent in July, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) announced Thursday.

The number of people employed in the country dropped by 10,200 to 11,653,200 in July, Xinhua cited the ABS as saying.

Full-time jobs fell 6,700 to 8,133,900 in July while part-time jobs decreased 3,500 to 3,519,300.

The number of people unemployed declined by 5,700 to 705,400 in July, the ABS reported. The labour force participation rate fell 0.2 percent to 65.1 percent.

"The steady jobless rate was unsurprising as businesses were sitting on their hands and waiting for the election outcome," said Savanth Sebastian, an economist with Australia's largest stock-broker firm Commsec.
