Over four lakh poor families in Tripura will be provided free cooking gas connections under the PMUY to ensure clean energy access to all and to protect the health of rural women, an IOC official said on Friday.

"Our target is to provide free Liquefied Petroleum Gas connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) to over 400,000 poor families in Tripura," state-run Indian Oil Corp Chief General Manager Uttiya Bhattacharyya told the media here.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Friday flagged off 50 mobile publicity vans to help PMUY benefits to reach across Tripura.

Deb said the state government was committed to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of smoke-free India a reality.

"Within 100 days, as many as 100,000 LPG connections under the PMUY will be handed out to poor families with IOC support," he added.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Manoj Kanti Deb and Revenue Minister Narendra Chandra Debbarma were present on the occasion.

The PMUY was launched in May 2016, under which cash assistance is given to beneficiaries to get deposit-free LPG connections.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by the Prime Minister last month approved to increase the PMUY target from five crore to eight crore with an additional allocation of Rs 4,800 crore. The revised target would be achieved by 2020.
