Tributes were paid to the 16th century Dhrupad musician Pandit Baijnath Mishra, popularly known as Baiju Bawra at the second edition of the Baiju Bawra Dhrupad Utsav, organised at Chanderi town in Madhya Pradesh.

Artists and personalities including Ustad Bahauddin Mohiuddin Dagar, Dev Prakash Chaudhary, Iqbal Rizwi, Dhrupad vocalists Sanjeev Jha and Manish Kumar were present on the event held on Wednesday evening.

The event also saw a panel consisting of journalists, music critics and musicians discussing the role of art and music in society.

"The decision of bringing a Dhrupad festival to Chanderi was a conscious one. Why should classical music be confined to only Banaras, Calcutta, Lucknow and other obvious names? There is a need for the classical music forms to reach a wider audience," Chandra Prakash Tiwari, Secretary, Baiju Bawra Dhrupad Utsav, said in a statement.

Ustad Bahauddin Dagar was bestowed with the Baiju Bawra Smriti Samman.
