A Thai court on Wednesday approved an arrest warrant against a new suspect in the August 17 bombings in Bangkok, bringing the total number of arrest warrants issued in connection with the case to 14.

The new suspect is an unidentified man with short hair, who seems to be in his 30s and could speak Thai, Metropolitan Police Chief Srivara Rangsi-prammanaku was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Closed-circuit camera footage showed that the suspect bought bomb-making materials at a shop in Bangkok's Klongton area, which were later seized at an apartment in the capital's Nong Chok District, according to Srivara.

The new suspect is charged with illegal possession of explosives. So far, two of the 14 people facing arrest warrants have been apprehended.

Srivara added that police would seek arrest warrants for more suspects in the bombing at Erawan Shrine in downtown Bangkok, which killed 20 people and injured more than 120 others, and a subsequent blast at the Sathorn pier, which caused no casualties.

In a related development, Malaysian police announced Wednesday that they had arrested eight people with suspected links to the Bangkok blasts.

But Malaysian authorities have yet to confirm whether the suspects were involved in the incidents, Thailand's national police chief Somyot Pumpunmuang said.
