Police Thursday opened access to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) office here after four days.

The main gate of the office was unlocked around 11.50 a.m. Thursday. But heavy deployment of security forces continued to remain in front of the office.

The office was kept under tight surveillance by security forces for the last few days.

Although the gate was unlocked, water cannon and armoured vehicles could still be seen near the office, bdnews24.com reported.

Several other party leaders, including vice chairman Selima Rahman, Khaleda's advisor Sabih Uddin Ahmed, central leaders Shirin Sultana, Rasheda Begum Heera and Sultana Ahmed, were in the Gulshan office.

Khaleda was confined at her home Sunday following announcements of holding rallies by both the BNP and the Awami League over the first anniversary of the 10th parliamentary elections Jan 5.

Police blocked her way when she wanted to head for the party's Naya Paltan office in Dhaka that night.

Khaleda has stayed inside the office locked from the inside that night with heavy police deployment outside.

On Monday, police blocked Khaleda again when she prepared to head for the party's "Murder of Democracy Day" programme. They placed the main entrance under lock and key.

The BNP called for a nationwide indefinite blockade in protest from Tuesday.
