Millions of Bangladeshis in the July 2016-June 2017 fiscal year remitted home nearly $13 billion, a central bank official said on Thursday.
"The flow of inward remittances in the 2016-17 financial year fell by about 14.47 per cent to $12,769.45 million," Xinhua news agency quoted the Bangladesh Bank (BB) official as saying.
The official said the decrease in total inflow of remittance was mainly due to sluggish overseas employment in some Middle Eastern countries and devaluation of their currencies against the US dollar.
According to the official, millions of non-resident Bangladeshis remitted home in June a total of $1.21 billion.
In June last year overseas Bangladeshis sent home $1.47 billion, he said.
The inflow remittances from nearly 10 million Bangladeshis, living and working in over 100 countries, in the last 2015-16 financial year fell by about 2.55 per cent to $14.93 billion.
