Government-owned banks will function on Sunday in flood-affected Chennai and other Tamil Nadu districts in order to help people.

"The government-owned banks are working tomorrow (Sunday). As the city was hit by floods during the last couple of days, people were put to hardship. Now that the rains have stopped and water levels are receding, keeping the bank open on Sunday will be of help to the common man," a union leader told IANS.

On Friday, the department of financial services conducted a review meeting in New Delhi with all the public and private sector banks to review banking services in the flood-hit Tamil Nadu districts.

The central government had asked all the banks to restore banking services in affected areas as early as possible and provide ATM and other services to the people round the clock.

The banks were requested to provide mobile ATM or point of sales machine services using boats and other means. Banks have been asked to replenish cash in all the ATMs.

All the banks in flood affected areas will remain open on Sunday and will also offer extended business hours.

Four districts in Tamil Nadu - Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur and Cuddalore - were affected by floods owing to record rains.
