West Bengal Police's CID on Wednesday took over the probe into the carcass meat selling racket case that recently surfaced in the state and would take the apprehended persons in their custody soon, a senior officer said.

"Yesm we have taken over the carcass meat case registered in South 24 Parganas district's Budge Budge from the state police. All the arrested persons in the case would be remanded to CID custody," Deputy Inspector General, West Bengal CID, Nishad Parvez told IANS.

Police late last month busted a racket involved in processing the flesh of carcasses collected from dumping grounds in and adjoining suburbs and selling it to local restaurants and departmental stores and seized huge quantity of rotten meat from a city cold storage.

A dozen people have so far been arrested including the kingpin Biswanath Garai (52), who also owned the cold storage in north Kolkata's Narkeldanga.

The West Bengal government on Tuesday formed a high-powered committee headed by the Chief Secretary to come up with a fool-proof mechanism to check any recurrence of the case that has created panic among consumers of non-vegetarian dishes in the state.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the issue was not confined within Bengal and many of the operators were from areas beyond the state's border.
