Flanked by school children, ministers, celebrities and Trinamool Congress leaders, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday walked four km through the city's heart to underscore the need for safe driving.
With accompanying children and others holding aloft posters, banners and festoons highlighting the slogan 'Safe drive, save life', the colourful rally started at Moulali and covered stretches of central Kolkata before ending at the Kolkata Mounted Police ground in the Esplanade area.
Miniature models of cars, bikes, baul singers, smartly dressed police sergeants and police bands were part of the rally, which was a follow-up on the road safety drive kickstarted by the state government last month.
A huge crowd followed the Chief Minister, who called upon children to take the message of sensible road behaviour and safe driving everywhere.
Bengali film and television personalities, ministers Firhad Hakim, Sovandeb Chatterjee, Mukul Roy, Arup Biswas and Sovan Chatterjee who is also the city Mayor, participated.
Similar programme was held in all district and block headquarters, 117 municipalities, six municipal corporations and the Gorkha Territorial administration to increase awareness about traffic rules.
