The driver of the car that met with an accident last week resulting in the death of famous Bengali folk singer Kalikaprasad Bhattacharya has been arrested from South Kolkata, police said on Monday.
"Arnab Raut, the driver of Kalikaprasad Bhattacharya's SUV that met with an accident near Hooghly district's Gurap last Tuesday, was arrested from South Kolkata's Kasba area on Sunday night," an officer from Kasba police station said.
The driver was on the run since police booked him under IPC Section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) on the basis of the complaint lodged by the wife of the deceased.
"The car crashed into the roadside railing and fell 20 feet into a marshy lowland. One of the SUV's wheels also came off during the incident. We are investigating," police said.
Bhattacharya and other members of the folk band "Dohar" were on their way to perform in a cultural programme in Birbhum district when the accident occurred.
