A teenaged girl was found hanging from the ceiling of her house in West Bengal Wednesday, police said. The girl's kin complained that she committed suicide after being molested by a youth but investigators rubbished the allegation.
"The body of the 18-year-old girl was found hanging inside her house in Naihati," said Barrackpore Police Commissioner Sanjay Singh.
Her family alleged that she committed suicide after molestation Tuesday night by a youth, who had been harassing her for marrying him. Singh, however, said there was no evidence to suggest this.
The body of the girl was spotted by her family members early Wednesday in North 24-Parganas district's Naihati area, some 40 km from Kolkata.
The family members filed a police complaint alleging that she committed suicide as she was unable to bear the ignominy of being molested by the youth in front of her younger brother.
The girl's family alleged that a youth who had been pestering the girl to marry him, barged into their house Tuesday night when she was alone and molested her. He later fled after the neighbours were alerted by the girl's cries for help.
"The boy had been regularly harassing my daughter for marrying him. Last night he attacked her inside the house. My daughter has committed suicide because of the boy," said the girl's mother.
