Bengaluru's IISc tops in university rankings, JNU third

The Indian Institute of Science at Bengaluru in Karnataka has been ranked the best in university category of 'India Ranking 2016' by the union HRD ministry. The Institute Of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, follows in second place.

Jawaharlal Nehru University was ranked third, followed by the University of Hyderabad and Tezpur University, Assam.

The Indian Institute of Management in Bengaluru was ranked the top management institute while Indian Institute of Technology-Madras was the top engineering institute in India.

The Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Manipal in Karnataka topped among the pharmacy (research and teaching) institutes, followed by the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Chandigarh and Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi.

The announcement of the rankings was made by the union human resource development ministry under its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) programme in the presence of HRD Minister Smriti Irani here on Monday.

In the university category, other top-ranked institutes were University of Delhi (6th), Banaras Hindu University at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh (7th), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology in Kerala (8th), Birla Institute of Technology and Science at Pilani in Rajasthan (9th), Aligarh Muslim University (10th) and Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal (11th). Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi was ranked 83rd.

The NIRF evaluated 100 higher educational institutions each in engineering, management, universities and pharmacy categories.

The rankings were based on the five parameters of teaching and learning process, research, professional practice and collaborative performance, graduation outcome and outreach and perception.
