State-run heavy electrical equipment-maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) Thursday said it has commissioned the second 600 MW-capacity thermal unit in Odisha for a private thermal power firm.

BHEL has set up two plants for Jindal India Thermal Power Limited's upcoming 1,200 MW thermal power project in Angul district of the state. The first 600 MW unit was commissioned in May last year.

The Maharatna's scope of work in the contract envisaged design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of steam turbines, generators and boilers, along with associated auxiliaries, electricals and others.

"The company has so far contracted 21 sets of 600 MW units, out of which 11 have already been commissioned. These sets have a very high level of indigenisation. A large number of similar sets ensures easy availability of spares and operator's familiarity," the company said in a statement.

The electricals manufacturing company is presently executing a total of 3,970 MW-capacity thermal projects in the state.
