Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday termed Bhutan an example to the world in establishment of democratic values.

Modi, who met a delegation of parliamentarians from Bhutan, recalled that his first visit as prime minister was to the Himalayan nation.

The delegation was led by Bhutan's National Assembly Speaker Jigme Zangpo and National Council Chairperson Sonam Kinga.

According to an official release, Zangpo conveyed condolences on behalf of the government and the people of Bhutan on the death of former president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Modi said the visit of parliamentary delegation was a testimony to the support for India-Bhutan ties across the political spectrum in Bhutan.

The prime minister appreciated the wisdom of successive Druk Gyalpos of Bhutan in successfully guiding Bhutan to democracy, adding Bhutan is an example to the world in establishment of democratic values, the release said.

Modi expressed satisfaction at the progress in bilateral relations since his visit, including in the hydro-power sector. He reiterated that India will remain a committed partner in Bhutan's development.
