Bihar Police on Thursday refuted reports that a 21-year-old woman was gangraped in East Champaran district, maintaining that in effect only an attempt was made to rape her.
It was earlier reported that the woman was gangraped and her private organs were mutilated by the accused who inserted a pistol and wooden objects.
Additional Director General (Police Headquarters) Sunil Kumar said it was actually a case of attempt to rape. "Our investigation has revealed that the woman was not gangraped as was reported, rather an attempt was made to rape her," he said.
He said the doctors who examined the woman confirmed that she was not raped.
Kumar said the accused had not been arrested so far but raids were continuing.
