The BJP on Friday announced Ashu Verma as its candidate for the mayoral by-election of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation.

Verma, a former BJP district president and Ghaziabad Development Authority member, contested the Murad Nagar assembly seat on party ticket in 2007 but lost to Rajpal Tyagi.

The mayoral post is vacant since the death of Teluram Kamboj in August 2015.

Verma said he would file his nomination papers on January 17. Polling is scheduled for February 7.
