The first day of the 17th Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday saw disruptions by the opposition, but there were some head turning moments too. A lawmaker of the ruling BJP came to the House in a bullock cart, while a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator arrived in an e-rickshaw.
Jawahar lal Rajpur of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who has been elected from Garautha assembly constituency in Jhansi, shocked many bystanders, legislators and security staff when he reached the state assembly in a bullock cart. He was first stopped by the security at the gates but was allowed in after he showed his ID card and insisted that he be allowed in as he was a farmer and the cart was his vehicle.
BSP legislator from Bhinga, Shrawasti Mohammad Aslam Raini also created a flutter when he came to attend the maiden sitting of the new assembly on an e-rickshaw.
Most other lawmakers drove in their plush luxury cars and SUVs, though they were minus the usual red beacons fitted on them.
