The BJP leaders are misleading people and the central government over the site of the permanent campus of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP), Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said on Tuesday.

The state government long ago decided that the CUHP's consolidated campus would be set up at Dharamsala in Kangra district and also finalised land at Jadrangal near Chamunda temple, but state BJP leaders were spreading confusion over the decision, Virbhadra Singh said in a statement.

The chief minister especially blamed BJP's Lok Sabha member Anurag Thakur for misguiding the people. Thakur, he said, wanted the central university to be set up at Dehra town in his own parliamentary constituency.

Dehra town also falls in the Kangra district and is part of the Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency that Thakur represents.

Singh said he never wrote to the central government recommending that the university campus be located at Dehra as was claimed by former BJP minister Kishan Kapoor.

The BJP leaders, he said, were not only trying to mislead the people but had also misinformed union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani on the issue.

He said a large tract of land was finalised at Jadrangal near Chamunda temple in Dharamsala for the university's campus and that some of the CUHP's affiliated colleges could still be set up at Dehra.

The CUHP, which currently operates from a temporary campus at Shahpur in Kangra district, was set up in 2009 under an act of parliament to establish 16 new universities in states that did not already have a central university.
