The BJP won only one out of eight seats in the Agra Cantonment Board, and two out of seven in neighbouring Mathura in the elections held in the two places Sunday.
The Agra Cantonment Board poll results were declared Sunday night, and those of Mathura Monday morning.
The Agra battle acquired a degree of prestige because the Bharatiya Janata Party for the first time contested the election on its symbol. Earlier, it used to back Independents.
BJP MP and union minister of state Ram Shankar Katheria campaigned for party candidates in a bid to ensure a big victory.
Independents won seven seats in Agra, with Pankaj Mahendru scoring a hat trick. The lone woman winner was Seema Rajput, also an Independent.
