The body of a foreign militant injured in a gunfight with the security in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district Tuesday was recovered Thursday, police said.
"Police retrieved the body of a militant from an orchard in Tral (Pulwama). The militant was injured during an gunfight with Tral police and the army on May 6," a senior police official said.
He said that acting on a tip off regarding movement of militants during the night hours, Awantipora police and army laid an ambush near Dadsara-Amirabad May 6.
"Late in the evening, the ambush team reported some movement. The team asked them to stop and reveal their identity, but the militants retaliated with heavy fire triggering a gunfight.
"However, the militants taking advantage of darkness and vegetation managed to escape. Following the gunfight, the ambush team detected blood stain marks on the trails of the fleeing militants. Next morning, police recovered an AK-47 rifle near the encounter site believed to be that of the injured militant," he said.
Police Thursday the body of the injured militant from an orchard at Panzoo, Tral. The slain militant has been identified as Syed Mawia, a foreign militant of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) outfit.
"He was one of the militants involved in the killing of Numbardar (village headman) Mohammad Anwar at village Amlar, Tral recently," said the official.
