At least five people were killed and 27 injured on Friday in a series of bombs attacks in eastern Afghanistan, officials said.

"The city of Jalalabad, near the Pakistan border, was subject to a series of three hidden improvised explosive device (IED) attacks," Xinhua news agency quoted official spokesman Attaullah Khogyani.

The first bomb claimed the lives of a minor and a high-ranking police officer, according to the spokesman.

In a second attack, two hidden bombs were detonated consecutively killing two civilians and a police officer near a firefighter's headquarters.

Some 27 people were injured in the bombings, all of whom have since been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Afghan police services opened an investigation into the events.

The National Directorate of Security arrested a suspected member of the Islamic State terror group who allegedly confessed to planting the explosive devices.

The suspect was reportedly detained while filming the aftermath of the bombings on his mobile phone.

However, neither the IS -- which controls pockets of territory in the region -- nor the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.--IANS
