World No.1 Brazil and hosts Italy moved a step closer to the semifinals after winning their opening matches of the third round at FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship.
The reigning Olympic champions Brazil beat China 25-19, 25-16, 25-15 while Italy powered past the US 25-23, 25-22, 25-20 Wednesday, reports Xinhua.
Thaisa, Jaqueline and Fe Garay each contributed 15 points in Brazil's win over China whose best scorer was Ting Zhu with 10 kills.
Brazil will need only one set Friday against the Dominican Republic to qualify for Saturday's semifinals. China, on the other hand, will need to beat the Dominican Republic Thursday.
Meanwhile, Italy came from behind in the first two sets to overpower the US in straight sets. Antonella Del Core led the Italians with 15 points.
The hosts need only one set against Russia Friday to qualify for Saturday's semifinals.
