A Pakistani man, who had been arrested and imprisoned for crossing into India illegally but had escaped after his release, was caught by the Border Security Force near the border in Jammu district as he was trying to cross over into his country, police said.
"Troopers of BSF arrested Pakistani national identified as Zahid Farooq, son of Muhammad Anwar, resident of Nawamod village of Cheechawali tehsil in Sahiwal district (Pakistan), in R.S.Pura sector while he was trying to cross over to Pakistan," a senior police official told IANS.
Farooq had been arrested in 2006 after he had crossed the international border into the Indian side, and was sentenced to two years imprisonment by a court for crossing the border without a passport, the official said.
"After serving the sentence, he was handed over to Khour police station in Jammu district to be handed over to Pakistan authorities but escaped from the police station and had also been to Amritsar where he reportedly worked for some time as a labourer," the official said, adding he was still in custody of the BSF who will be handing him over to the local police.
