Border Security Force (BSF) troopers have recovered six kg of heroin along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab, a BSF official said on Monday.

The heroin, valued at Rs.30 crore in the international market, was recovered near border outpost (BoP) Udhar Dhariwal, nearly 300 km from here, in the Amritsar sector early on Monday.

BSF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) R.S. Kataria said that troopers noticed movement of Pakistani smugglers across the barbed wire fence late on Sunday night. The smugglers were challenged but they opened fire on the BSF party and escaped, taking advantage of the darkness and cultivation, leaving the contraband.

The total seizure of heroin this year by the BSF along the Punjab border is nearly 219 kg. This is worth over Rs.1,095 crore in the international market.

The seizure of heroin in the entire last year (2014) was 361 kg in the Punjab sector, which was the highest in any year.
