Budapest will replace Guadalajara as host for the 2017 World Swimming Championships after the Mexican city withdrew due to financial problems.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban made the announcement on Wednesday in the country's parliament accompanied by the world swimming governing body (FINA) executive director Cornel Marculescu, reports Xinhua.

The championships will be the largest international event hosted by the Hungarian capital, which was scheduled to host the 2021 world swimming championships, but a new bidding process will be opened for that event now, FINA said in a statement.

The world championships are held every two years and feature swimming, diving, open water swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo.

Mexico withdrew last month, citing budget shortfalls connected with the recent drop in oil prices. This year's championships will be held in Kazan, Russia.
