Two days after it broke out, the fire that gutted a three-storied building in city's commercial hub Burrabazar was under control, but firemen were still on the job to put out the smoulders in some pockets, officials said on Wednesday.
Ten fire tenders were at the spot.
"The fire is under control but the smoulders are there in some pockets underneath the debris. As a result, smoke is still coming out of the first floor of the building that was vastly affected in the fire," said a fire official.
"We will continue our work till the smoke is gone, so that the fire does not reoccur," he said.
The massive fire on 3, Amaratala Lane in Burrabazar area was first noticed around 9.35 p.m. on Monday. The blaze intensified after cooking gas cylinder blasts and was fanned by inflammable materials kept at the premises also added to the fire.
As many as 35 fire tenders had to be pressed into service initially to control the blaze. Three firefighters were injured while combating the blaze on Monday night.
