Cabinet approves cadre review of Central Engineering Service (Roads)

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday approved the cadre review of Central Engineering Service (Roads) of the Road Transport and Highways Ministry.

"The proposal will be implemented immediately," said a cabinet communique.

According to it, the service's cadre strength will be revised with increase in the number of posts at higher administrative grade (HAG) level to two, at the senior administrative grade (SAG)level to five and the junior time scale (JTS) level to 36; decrease in the number of posts at the senior time scale (STS) level at 28, recruitment against 86 posts as special reserve at entry level (JTS) for deputation purpose only outside the cadre strength in addition to the normal vacancies arising at the JTS level in the cadre.

Set up in 1959, the first allocation of Group 'A' service technical posts was fixed at 189 in 1976. The last cadre review was carried out in 1987.

"Vacant posts of mechanical cadre will be utilized for filling up the same by civil engineers thereby merging the mechanical cadre with the civil cadre in a phased manner so that this shall not have any adverse impact on the present incumbents," the communique said, adding there is an additional expenditure of Rs. 1.8 crores per annum approximately involved in the cadre review proposal and no financial liability as regards the special reserve for deputation.
