Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad Wednesday said there would be a delay in the construction of a super speciality unit at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, the country's oldest medical college.

"There is a scheme where the government of India transforms medical colleges into super speciality. The Calcutta Medical College's expansion work had started with a budget of Rs.120 crore, with Rs.100 crore from the central government and Rs.20 crore from the state government's side," Azad told reporters here.

"The super speciality block that was supposed to come up has been delayed and we have enquired about the delay," Azad said about the proposed 200-bed super speciality unit.

He expressed satisfaction over the ongoing development work in the health sector in the state.

Azad also inspected the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute.
