Furthering its role in development of public policy in India, O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) at Sonipat, Haryana, recently launched a first of its kind executive education programme to enhance economic, financial and strategic skills of the senior utility regulators and regulatory strategists from across the country.

In his keynote address at the inauguration of the programme, Rahul Khullar, former chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), called the programme a "path breaking initiative" towards an enhanced inter-relationship between academic institutions and public policy practitioners.

"The current scenario where academic institutions are literally divorced from performing any role in the public policy domain cannot be allowed to continue. We need to constantly evolve and imbibe best practices from across the world," Khullar noted.

The six-day programme conducted at Jindal Institute of Leadership Development and Executive Education (JILDEE) aims to strategise the many challenges of infrastructure development and regulations present for the regulatory agencies and service providers.

"It is ironic to see that a private institution (JGU) is championing the cause and development of public policy in the country," Khullar added.

The 20 participants for the programmed are drawn from various organisations such as Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), Airports Economic Regulatory Authority Of India (AERA), TRAI and Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

"The programme on Utility Regulations and Strategy for Regulatory Bodies of India is truly unique as it is the first time that a comprehensive and combined programme has been designed and is being delivered to all major regulators in the country," professor C. Raj Kumar, founding vice chancellor, JGU, said on the occasion.

JILDEE has over the years trained various civil services in India and most recently in Afghanistan.

The institute has established an institutional framework to provide training, capacity building, executive education, continuing education, and leadership and management development programmes for a broad range of individuals and institutions in government agencies, public sector organizations, corporations, non-government organisations, intergovernmental organisations and various government departments in India and beyond.
